Call for Curatorial expressions of interest

As a new initiative, Latitude 53 is interested in exploring how artists can benefit from having their work shown and contextualized with other artists in a small group setting. Latitude 53 looks to match artists who are exploring similar themes or working within similar practices of creation. Latitude 53 looks to present exciting opportunities for artists to form new insights about their work by organizing small group exhibitions of 2–5 artists.

To this end, Latitude 53 is seeking a curator, writer, or other facilitator to work on a peer-to-peer basis in the realization of each group project for an extended period, in an artist-centred context. Latitude 53 hopes to enhance each artist’s individual work through curation and writing while maintaining an equitable relationship between all contributors. The curator will work on a peer-to-peer basis with artists to discover new ways of creating exhibitions. We are specifically interested in considering both those with experience working as curators and those coming to the project from other disciplines, and hope that interested parties will tell us about what their own practices or backgrounds might bring to a possible project.

Latitude 53 is specifically seeking facilitators or curators interested in the following broad themes:

  • Collections, ethnographies, or relationship and network interactions
  • Finding absurdity or tragedy in everyday life, or playing with clashing models of identity
  • Form and materiality, especially where design, performance, or everyday objects intersect with more formal practices

While Latitude 53 is specifically interested in the creation of group shows, the outcome of this call may differ depending on what would function best for the artists selected and the collaborative process itself—we remain open to projects manifesting in forms beyond gallery exhibitions.

Those interested in submitting should include in their proposal:

  • Statement of interest detailing your own approach to at least one of these themes;
  • Curriculum Vitae (Up to 4 pages);
  • Applicable samples of your work in related areas (images of curated exhibitions or artworks, excerpts or short texts, other media as appropriate for your field—if applicable, audio/video work via dropbox or vimeo link);
  • Optionally, a link to a website with examples of previous projects or other biographical information;
  • Contact information

Please include all written material as PDF files, and send submissions by email only to program@latitude53.org with “Curator submission” in the subject line.
