August Klintberg’s exhibition Portal uses installation, textiles, works on paper and other materials to approach the archive as a queer portal for intellectual, erotic, and sensory encounter. Here, the archive can be thought of as a physical place for research, and a discursive space created through dialogue and relationship. The included works refer to elements of the regional history of non-normative sexualities, as well as text and drawings pulled from popular culture, print archives, and histories associated with the nation state named "Canada."
Collaborators have made this show possible, including Jarvis Hall, Megan Kirk, and Jolie Bird. Significant sources for the development of this work include the Arquives (Toronto), Les archives gaies du Québec (Montreal), the Canadian Architectural Archives (Calgary) and Kevin Allen's book Our Past Matters. Exhibition text by Crystal Mowry.
