Shrina Patel + Zana Wensel | I am, I am, I am

Join us for a special performance of I am, I am, I am by Shrina Patel + Zana Wensel.

Tickets for a special preview and curator’s tour are available here. Tickets include a glass of wine and charcuterie from Cavern.

Performance starts at 7pm and is free to attend.

About the work:

How do we embody our relationship with the world? In their performance I am, I am, I am, Shrina Patel and Zana Wensel enter into an ecological and spiritual conversation with the Earth, and explore what it means to connect to our environment as humans at this time of ecological despair and socio-political tumult. Through a queer, eco-feminist lens, the two navigate their own internal and external embodiments of body-politics, while dually exploring how these notions inform their individual and collective relationship with the Earth.

Strategizing foreign languages and sounds, the artists move the audience deeper beyond the known debates around environmentalism, and into a sensory conversation. Drawing on the perspective of ‘Earth as Mother,’ Shrina plays with the traditional Hindu ceremony passed down through generations by male priests and into her/their embodied practice as a queer feminist. Thereby challenging the contradictory nature Women’s roles have played, for centuries, in the rituals within Hinduism. Whereas, Zana explores the notion of ‘Earth as Lover,’ and draws on concepts of eco-sexuality; that is, she rediscovers the delights and joys nature brings to and through the body. Through these channels, she revels in the intimate connection that can be found among all natural life (oneness).

As Zana and Shrina enter into a synchronous and synergetic dance of language and sounds, they reclaim and redefine the two spheres, and invite the audience to engage in their own conversations.

Roses ‘close cover strike gently’ Performance

Live performance by Roses with matchbooks and accompanying soundscape (recorded by Holland G.)

I was told that close cover strike gently or some variation of these words, was at one time or another the most reprinted text in the world. The sentiment of these practical, ubiquitous, and oddly poetic words ripple beyond simple instructions. Don’t press too hard, don’t smother or extinguish the flame. Protect it, and as you do so, move gently through the world.

The act of collecting is a form of organization and of making sense of the world. The contents gathered together establish a placement in time, they categorize a throughline of the efforts of many people, their interests and production, creating things persistently enough to be recognized and sewn into a collection. But all the same, each object possesses its own agency and life: each object has something to say and reveal in its own time. As a curator, which all of us are in one way or another, one listens for the gentle sentiment, the hushed whisper each piece of a collection has to impart. For me, this is represented in a collection of prose I've written for each matchbook I've found.

The following excerpts are pieces of the accompanying soundscape to my performance, close cover strike gently.

I want to become a self healing mat the kind you stick into and the wound patches itself up

The best part about heartbreak is that it has already happened

Queer people save my life over and over again
