Moe, Age 7, is a portrait of the artist’s mother, made in reference to a series of school photos from the 1970’s. While developing this work, Ligtvoet used oral storytelling as research into personal narratives behind being documented with a colonial lense as an indeigenous person. Through an exploration of colour and composition, Ligtvoet pursues playfulness and empathy in painting to contrast the treatment her mother received as an indigenous child in an institutionalized space.
Kiona Ligtvoet is a Cree-Metis artist from Michel First Nation. Ligtvoet focuses on painting and printmaking, and is based out of Amiskwacîwâskahikan/Edmonton. She completed her diploma in Fine Art from MacEwan in 2017 and is completing her BFA at the University of Alberta in 2020. Ligtvoet is currently expanding her body of work, touching on familial lines and her own displacement as an indigenous person.
