How to Light a Match is a video piece comprised of appropriated public domain educational films and original footage. Its narrative is constructed by the advice in fire safety films from the 1940s through the 1960s, red toy firefighters, and a sense of impending upheaval. The piece takes for granted that a match will be struck regardless of how the viewer takes its advice -- its offered words of wisdom form more of a skin around the anxiety of the lighting. The spark is the thing.

Packaged with with the video is a small clay sculpture and a single match which cannot be lit with any included materials.
